First steps after receiving an Income-tax or GST notice
A calm, practical sequence for identifying the issue, preserving the deadline and assembling the right records.
Receiving a notice does not by itself explain whether the matter is routine, informational or disputed. Begin by recording the date of receipt and the response date shown on the communication.
Check the source and reference
Access the relevant official portal directly rather than following an unfamiliar link. Confirm the assessment period, reference number, taxpayer details and the section or form mentioned.
Preserve the response deadline
Do not leave the notice unanswered. If the issue cannot be resolved immediately, obtain professional advice early enough to evaluate the available response or extension procedure.
Collect only relevant records
- The complete notice and annexures
- Filed return and acknowledgement for the relevant period
- Tax computation, ledgers and reconciliations
- Supporting documents directly connected with the issue
Avoid informal or incomplete replies
A response should address the actual query, use reconciled figures and retain proof of submission. Never share portal passwords or OTPs with an adviser.
